Gimpel stubs his toe and runs away from a Red Cross nurse. 11-3-1914

Remember when, during the American invasion of Veracruz, Gimpel got accidentally injured and landed in a cushy bed in a hospital tent with a cute nurse cooing over him? When he stubs his toe here during the Great War, he thinks he'll get more of the same. I made a gif of this cartoon, it's at the bottom of the post.



November 3, 1914: Not all that glitters is gold, especially in the war.
  1. GB: Oy! To hell with the soldiers the way they throw rocks in the middle of the road.
  2. GB: I'm sure I've broken a foot. What should I do? Am I going to die right here this way?
  3. GB: I'll go to the "Red Cross." There are lots of pretty nurses there, I can make matches.
  4. Nurse: You aren't with everybody else, mister? Come in and take off your clothes, we'll see.
  5. GB: Forget it, I've just become healthy. Who'd have thought a monkey could be a nurse.

ניט אַלעס װאָס שײַנט איז גאָלד. בפֿרט נאָך אין דער מלחמה.

גימפּעל בײניש: אױ! אין דער ערד זאָלען זײ געהן, דיא סאָלדאַטען, װיא זײ װאַרפֿען אָן סטײנער אין מיטען װעג.

גימפּעל בײניש: איך האָב אודאי צעבראָכען אַ פֿוס. װאָס טהוט מען? איך קען דאָך נאָך אַזױ אױסגעהן דאָ?

גימפּעל בײניש: איך׳ל זיך גאָר דורכגעהן צום ״רעד קראָס״. דאָרטען איז דאָ שעהנע נױרסעס, װעט זײַן שידוכים.

נױרס: איהר זײַט ניט מיט אַלעמען, מיסטער? קומט אַרײַן אין טהוט זיך אױס, װעלען מיר זעהן.

גימפּעל בײניש: מוחל, איך בין שױן געזונד געװאָרען. געה װײס אַז אַ מאָנקי זאָל זײַן אַ נױרס.
