Earlier in 1914 Gimpel went to Mexico during the U.S. invasion of Vera Cruz; when he was shot at he discovered that a sombrero snatched out of the dust was saving him - but only from the Mexican soldiers, he had to abandon it when he got into an American dominated area. Hmm, a version of "clothes make the man" - maybe the reason the armies are at war is ... different hats. And why do some fellows get saluted? Hats. A pacifist's hypothesis.
There is some good halfway Yiddishized English here: gebn a 'show' is my favorite.
November 12, 1914: The "war automobiles" are certainly not for him.
- Would I like to travel in an automobile? Why not?
- I think automobiles are as good as cholent.
- What's this? The automobile shoots? That's a fine story.
- To hell with the automobile and with the war.
- But I've always said the automobile is for loafers.
November 13, 1914: Sometimes a German hat is more prestigious than a Hester Street stovepipe.
- What's this? A hat from a German officer, it appears. Pretty good gear, I swear.
- There goes a new devil. Would it hurt to show up and make him a match?
- Meanwhile I should run from the soldier, because he might want to shoot me.
- ...
- I'm a smart guy. He thinks I'm a German officer and salutes me.
