Big snowstorm in New York City, February 1914 (Bonus post for Winter Storm Jonas)

UPDATE: Thanks to twitter and the Forverts, I now know the correct spelling for blizzard is zaverukhe:
זאַװערוכע

It's spelled with an aleph in the fourth frame of the first strip. I asked my Slavic languages consultant Professor Lawrence Feinberg (who coincidentally is the first cousin of my seventh-grade English teacher!) and he said:
Russian заваруха is a colloquial word meaning a commotion or uproar. Maybe by extension it's come to mean a howling blizzard in some dialects.
Anyway, there was a record-breaking Valentine's Day snowstorm in 1914 and it showed up in the Gimpel Beynish Yiddish comic strips. Here is a picture of the actual storm:

And here for your vicarious pleasure is Gimpel struggling with the storm (from Gimpel Beynish the Matchmaker Volume I). It seems that there was no city authority dealing with the snow if they were just paying civilians (sixteen cents an hour!) to shovel. Moyshe Motl was Gimpel's far-more-successful competitor.

I liked this line best:
A city with so many politicians and freeloaders and there's nobody to clean up the snow.

February 18, 1914: Well, when the snow melts maybe he'll find a bridegroom all ready to go.
  1. GB: Come, so what if it's snowing so hard. She's waiting for us.
  2. GB: Yes, Jake, in weather like this it's great to break plates.
  3. Jake: Say, Mister Gimpl Beynish, where are you dragging me? I'm drowning.
  4. GB: It's a bitter job, matchmaking. You have to go out even in a blizzard like this.
  5. GB: How'd he slip out of my hands? The charlatan!

February 23, 1914: Donkeys spring on a fallen lion.
  1. So, a bitter cold and blizzard! In addition, there's no work. I need to make at least a little something.
  2. Moyshe Motl: How's it going, Reb Gimpl Beynish? Not so happy, eh? If you want to earn a little, I've got something for you
  3. Moyshe Motl: Go over there with me and you'll earn a little. They'll even pay you today, right on the spot.
  4. GB: Really, I'll get paid today? I'll clinch the finest matches, as long as I see a little cash.
  5. Moyshe Motl: Here it is. Take a shovel and shovel snow. We pay a full sixteen cents an hour, right after the work's done.

March 4, 1914: Nevertheless it would be only fair if our city homeowners would do something about the snow.
  1. GB: So, go try and do business when the snow is up over your ears. Who feels like making a match now?
  2. GB: A city with so many politicians and freeloaders and there's nobody to clean up the snow. A scandal, upon my word.
  3. GB: Aren't I right, mister? Here, for example, I'd make you a match, to earn something, but just try when it's - - -
  4. The Mister: You want to earn something? Really? Then take the shovel and - - -
  5. GB: This must be a politician, a loafer. See his nerve? I, Gimpl Beynish, should shovel the snow. What a world!
