Fish, an ox, and a hammock. 8-16-1914, 8-17-1914, 8-18-1914

These illustrations seem extremely hurried.

My father did exactly what Gimpel does in this first strip, he took stuff from us to show us the right way to use it so we got bored and left.

In the second strip we see a gag that's been used before, playing on the famous Yiddish saying about how cats wreck things (a kats ken oykh kalye makhn). In this case he uses the made-up Yinglish verb spoilen.


August 16, 1914: Again he thinks he knows everything.
  1. Motke: Oy, father's coming. Let's hope he doesn't yet want to make matches for fish.
  2. Notke: Oh, Papa, leave us alone to catch fish. We want to play with them.
  3. GB: Blockheads, at least learn from a man who knows how to catch fish.
  4. GB: You see how hard this is? Probably a fifty pounder.
  5. ...

August 17, 1914: When you have boys like his, even a cow can wreck things.
  1. Suzy: Yes, he pleases ... Oy, an ox is running this way. Gevald, let's save ourselves!
  2. GB: Well, a cat can ruin things, but that a foolish ox can spoil a...
  3. ...
  4. GB: Oy, he's looking for me! Master of the Universe, send a miracle, make him blind.
  5. GB: Oy, a plague on my sons; they've been driving that cow.

August 18, 1914: An accident like this in his business could only take place in the country.
  1. GB: Out, loafers! The hammock is for a lady, not for you!
  2. GB: Sit, Suzy, I'll tell you who he is.
  3. GB: Oy, woe is me! Call a doctor! Gevald, a calamity!
  4. Suzy: Loafer, swindler! You played this trick on me intentionally.
  5. GB: Well, isn't that a Woman of Valor! And what a pair of paws on her!
8-16-1914
איהם דאַכט זיך װיעדער אַז ער קען אַלעס.

מאָטקע: אױ, דער פּאַפּאַ געהט. ער זאָל נאָך ניט װעלען רעדען שידוכים דיא פֿיש.

נאָטקע: אָה, פּאַפּאַ, לאָז אונז אַלײן כאַפּען פֿיש. מיר װילען זיך שפּיעלען דערמיט.

גימפּעל בײניש: שוטים, לאָזט זיך כאָטש לערנען פֿון אַ מענשען װאָס קען כאַפּען פֿיש.
