He finally notices World War I has begun (well, they didn't know it was only #1): 8-2-1914, 8-3-1914, 8-4-1914

I'd guess the batch of comic strips Sam Zagat submitted before the outbreak of the war ran out and so on August 4 1914 we see Gimpel reacting, for the first time, to what is headlining in his own newspaper. I'm sure there were discussions about how involved the cartoons should get in war. On the one hand, to ignore the war must have seemed fatuous; on the other hand, people need a break from worry and if they can't get it from the funnies, where then?


August 2, 1914: Even mosquitoes hinder his business.
  1. Yes, she'll pay up the sum of $500, cash on the spot, straight into your hand.
  2. And here she is, herself. Wouldn't you say she's a regular beauty...
  3. What's the matter with you? Why didn't you tell me sooner that you're sick?
  4. Oy! I'm sick too! Gevald, this is practically like Pharoah's plague!
  5. If only they'd told me that in the country there are no cockroaches or mosquitoes.

August 3, 1914: His kids had to have a ride.
  1. GB: Understand me, for him money is like mud, a regular sport you know.
  2. GB: Oy, vey iz mir! My kids! They'll be killed! Gevald, save them!
  3. Notke: Hurray! Giddyup, horsie! Oy, how does one get down from the wild dragon?
  4. Motke: Say, this is not an airplane. Get me down too.
  5. Suzy: You're an old swindler. You set your loafers on me.

August 4, 1914: He too is a victim of the war.
  1. Don't worry, Suzy. I'll go bring him and we'll be breaking plates before the day is out.
  2. Say, Jake, throw away that foolishness and come with me, it concerns an important matter. It will be all right.
  3. Why is he running, that crazy guy? Say, come here! I want to talk with you.
  4. What's this? War? What a disaster! Once again there will be a shortage of bachelors in America.
  5. Say, wait, I'll go with you. Where there are a lot of bachelors, that's where I want to be.
8-2-1914
אַפֿילו מאָסקיטאָס שטערען איהם אױך אין דיא ביזנעס.

יאָ, זיא װעט דיר אָבצעהלען פֿינף הונדערטער, ספּאָט קעש, גלײַך אין דער האַנד אַרײַן.

אָט דאָס איז זיא אַלײן. נו, זאָג אַלײן, איז זיא ניט אַ רעגעלע קראַסאַװי…

װאָס איז דער מעהר מיט דיר? פֿאַרװאָס האָסטו מיר פֿריהער ניט געזאָגט אַז דו ביזט אַ קראַנקער?

אױ! איך בין אױך אַ קראַנקער! גװאַלד, עס איז שיער ניט װיא פּרעה׳ס מכּה.

אַבי מען האָט מיר געזאָגט, אַז אין קאָנטרי איז ניטאָ קײן קאָקורעטשעס מיט מאָסקיטאָס.

8-3-1914
דאַרף זיך זײַנע חבֿרה פֿאַרגלוסטען אַ ראַיד.

גימפּעל בײניש: פֿאַרשטעהסטו מיך, ער איז אַ בחור, װאָס געלד איז בײַ איהם בלאָטע, אַ רעגעלע ספּאָרט יו נו.
2
גימפּעל בײניש: אױ װעה איז מיר! מײַנע קינדער! זײ װערען דער׳הרג׳עט. גװאַלד, מענשען ראַטעװעט.

נאָטקע: הוררעי! גידאָפּ האָרסי! אױ, װיא קריכט מען אַראָפּ פֿון דעם װילדען דראַגונער?
4
מאָטקע: סעי, דאָס איז ניט קײן פֿליה-מאַשין. נעהם מיך אױך אַרױף פֿון אױבען.
5
סוזי: איהר זײַט אַן אַלטער שװינדלער. איהר האָט דאָס אָנגערײצען אײַערע לױפֿערס.

8-4-1914
ער איז אױך אַ קרבן פֿון דער מלחמה.
1
ניט געזאָרגט, סוזי. איך געה איהם שױן ברענגען און מיר װעלען נאָך הײַנט ברעכען טעלער.
2
סעי, דזשײק, װאַרף אַװעק דיא נאַרישקײטען און קום מיט מיר מכּח אַ תּכלית. ס׳װעט זײַן אָלל-רײַט.
3
װאָס איז ער אַנטלאָפֿען דער משוגע׳נער? סעי, קום אַהער! אַ מענש װיל מיט דיר רעדען.
4
װאָס איז דאָס? מלחמה גאָר? אױ אַ קלאָג! עס װעט שױן װידער אױספֿעהלען בחורים אין אַמעריקאַ.
5
סעי, װאַרט, איך געה מיט דיר. דאָרט װאו אַ סך בחורים זײַנען װיל איך אױך זײַן.
