England declares war on Turkey and Gimpel gets conned by a prospective bridegroom. 11-23-1914

On the front page: England grabs Israel



I don't know much history but I can read Wikipedia. This headline is coming on the heels of the Ottoman Empire declaring war on England and the Balfour Declaration that there would be a Jewish State in Palestine.

Meanwhile, on the back page, looks like this bluffer is succeeding in putting one over on Gimpel:



November 23, 1914: He goes back into business, but it costs him money right off the bat.
  1. Jake: Hello Mr. Gimpel Beynish! Do you have some respectable bride who would suit me?
  2. GB: Why wouldn't I? We can break dishes any time.
  3. Jake: Lend me $5 in the mean time, I'll dress up nicely so I'll be pleasing.
  4. Jake: And as soon as I get the dowry, you'll get both your matchmaking fee and your $5.
  5. GB: It seems to me I might as well put up a tombstone for my $5.

ער טרעט צוריק אַרײַן אין ביזנעס, אָבער דערװײַל קאָסט ער ערשט געלד.
