Gimpel's sojourn in Europe, on the battlefields of World War I, is over, and he's come home to the Lower East Side. These are sweet moments.
I was struck by how poorly these strips were drawn. Was something wrong? Did Zagat lose his favorite pen? Did somebody else draw these pictures? Or trace over them?
November 20, 1914: He gets a pretty good welcome coming back to the free land.
- Here she is, the Mrs. Statue of Liberty. I'll soon be home.
- What's this? My family's not here...
- Greetings, my little loafers! Healthy years to you. Hug your dear father.
- ...
- This time I'm excusing you, loafers, but next time look before you leap on me and knock me down.
November 21, 1914: If you want to hear about the war you must go to him.
- You want me to tell you how things go in the war? Sure.
