Gimpel misses his "loafers" and decides to go home to New York. 11-19-1914
In his imagination Gimpel's little loafers are well-groomed and well-behaved. He longs to go home and give them the spankings they deserve. And besides - "go try making matches with the Angel of Death." A powerful strip.
November 19, 1914: Finally he persuades himself there's no work for him on the battlefield.
- Here I sit and ask, why am I here? Go try making matches with the Angel of Death.
- What evil spirit dragged me here into the war? Who, here, needs Gimpel Beynish?
- And furthermore, my children -- my dear little loafers. Who's giving them their spankings while I'm gone?
- You all and your swinish war can go to hell. I promise I'll get the last laugh.
- You can all stay here and bang your heads against the wall, and I'll go home to my matchmaking.
