The unemployed do not wish to marry. 4-7-1914

Gimpel expounds on the trickle-down theory.

I'm charmed by the use of the Yinglish word slek (slack) for when there is not enough work. It generalizes to "a biterer slek," it seems so much more immediate and intimate than "recession."


April 7, 1914: He wanders into a meeting of the unemployed, but without a crumb of success.
  1. What's this? A whole gathering over there, and one stands and lectures. I'm going to see what he wants.
  2. He's saying it's a bitter "slack" time now. Nothing to eat. I'll talk to the people.
  3. Brother humans! I already know times are "slack." But why is that the case? Why are you so hungry? Why?
  4. Because you haven't married, the tailors have no wedding dresses to sew, the klezmer musicians have nowhere to play, and ...
  5. Obey me and make a match...

ער פֿאַרבלאָנדזשעט צו אַ פֿערזאַמלונג פֿון אַרבײטסלאָזע, אָבער אָהן אַ ברעקעל ערפֿאָלג.
