"What good are shnaps to me since I'm not married yet?" 4-8-1914

Does that mean when you're not married you have no need of shnaps? Or does it mean you don't get to participate in Passover shnaps rituals if you're not married?



April 8, 1914: Sometimes shnaps is a means of talking somebody into a match, and sometimes not.
  1. Jake: I should buy shnaps for Passover from you? What good are shnaps to me since I'm not married yet?
  2. GB: That's how it is? You're still a bachelor? Don't move. First you've got to have a little shnaps.
  3. GB: Have one more little bitty cup. What good shnaps! I tell you, I've got a good bride for you in addition...
  4. Jake: A fine bride, fine shnaps, everything is fine in America. And you're a fine man. To your health!
  5. GB: I'll wait here until he sobers up. He has to pay me for the shnaps. What a drunkard!

אַמאָל איז שנאַפּס טאַקע אַ מיטעל אײַנצורעדען יענעם אַ שידוך, און אַמאָל טאַקע ניט.

דזשײק: איך זאָל בײַ אײַך קױפֿען שנאַפּס אױף פּסח? װאָס טױ מיר שנאַפּס, אַז איך בין נאָך ניט פֿערהײראַט?

גימפּעל בײניש: אַזױ? ביזט נאָך אַ בחור? געהסטו ניט אַװעק פֿון דאַנען. דוא מוזט פֿריהער מאַכען אַ שנעפּסיל.

גימפּעל בײניש: נעהם נאָך אַ קאָפּעטשקע. אַזאַ גוטער שנאַפּס! איך זאָג דיר, אַז מען האָט נאָך דערצו אַ פֿײַנע כּלה…

דזשײק: אַ פֿײַנע כּלה, פֿײַנער שנאַפּס, אַלעס איז פֿײַן אין אַמעריקאַ. און איהר זײַט אַ פֿײַנער מאַן – לחײם!

גימפּעל בײניש: איך׳ל דאָ װאַרטען, ביז דוא װעסט זיך אױסניכטערען. מוזט מיר בעצאָהלען פֿאַר׳ן שנאַפּס. געזעהן אַזאַ שיכּור!
