Flypaper, a cat, and a fire hydrant. 6-13-1914, 6-14-1914, 6-15-1914

It's easy to imagine many of these strips as little Yiddish skits. I remember fly paper in my grandmother's kitchen, it fascinated me. (She was very old fashioned.) It would not have occurred to me to touch it.

I haven't been able to figure out a good way to translate khevre the way Gimpel uses it when addressing his boys. It's often used in a fairly formal manner and means "association, society, gang." As usual, though, there is a sarcastic side too. Vayse khevre = street urchins; shvartse khevre = demons. I'm going with lads or guys most of the time.



June 13, 1914: A tragedy in seven talkative acts and one mute one.
  1. Khashe Mushe: Don't mess with the fly paper, kids. It sticks to stuff and you can't get it unstuck.
  2. Notke: Oy, the paper has stuck to me completely and I can't take it off.
  3. Motke: Mine is the same way too. Papa, Mama, come quickly! Take it off me! I'm afraid.
  4. GB: Foolish little foals! It's no big deal taking the paper off! There you go!
  5. GB: Oy, now it's stuck to me too. Khashe Mushe, come here quickly, save me!
  6. Khashe Mushe: You're a luckless oaf too, no offense, my...
  7. GB: Loafers, what have you done? Now the paper is stuck to your mother and can't come off.
  8. Motke and Notke: .....

June 14, 1914: Nevertheless nobody could swear his boys earned the blows he gave them.
  1. We have the honor of introducing Gimpel Beynish's famous hat and the little cat which goes inside it to rest.
  2. And here Gimpel Beynish takes his leave from his children before he goes out in the street to hitch up couples.
  3. Of course it's understood that a cat has scant sympathy for matchmakers. Why? Ask us an easier question. It's just that way, and that's all.
  4. Just take a look - don't Gimpel Beynish's sons look like little angels? If you ask them, they didn't know a thing about what happened here.
  5. But Gimpel Beynish has a completely different opinion. As you can see by his current activity.

June 15, 1914: Nevertheless it's hard to say if his kids are just green, or if they're actual loafers.
  1. GB: Aha, you're actually asking me if it's a good match? If I say so, it's so.
  2. GB: Come over here, Suzy, you two can talk it over and we'll break plates.

  4. Suzy: Pay, pardon me, for my dress. And furthermore you'd better teach your loafers.
  5. GB: So that's how it is - you ruin the city water, a girl's dress, and my match?

פֿונדעסטװעגען איז שװער צו זאָגען צי זײַנע קינדער זײַנען בלױז גרינע אָדער טאַקע לאָופֿערס.
