Gimpel travels on a battleship to Mexico. 4-30-1914

So perhaps we assume Gimpel is traveling courtesy of the American government, because he certainly doesn't have the money to pay for his passage to Vera Cruz!


April 30, 1914: His first foray into the world is not very auspicious.
  1. GB: I'm going on a battleship, traveling to Mexico. It's ok, it won't be a disaster.
  2. GB: Oy, my head! I forgot completely that I'm no hero on the ocean. Oy, this is bad!
  3. GB: What am I saying? Bad? Soon it will be good. I brought a good-sized flask of whiskey with me.
  4. Officer: Say, mister, have you forgotten the navel ministry forbids drinking booze on a battleship?
  5. GB: Oy, what a robber, what an Enemy of Israel. Just for this I'll give him an ague instead of a bride. What an antisemite... oh, my head!
4-30-1914
זײַן ערשטער אַרױספֿאָהר אױף דער װעלט איז ניט זעהר מזל׳דיג.

גימפּעל בײניש: געה איך מיר אַרױף אױף אַ קריעג-שיף און פֿאָהר מיר קײן מעקסיקאָ. נישקשה, איך׳ל ניט פֿערפֿאַלען װערען.

גימפּעל בײניש: אױ, מײַן קאָפּ! איך האָב נאָר אין גאַנצען פֿערגעסען, אַז אױפֿ׳ן ים בין איך ניט קײן גיבור. אָי, שלעכט!

גימפּעל בײניש: װאָס זאָג איך ״שלעכט״? עס װעט באַלד זײַן גוט. איך האָב דאָך מיט מיר מיטגענומען אַ היבשע פֿלעשעל מיט משקה.

אָפֿיציער: סעי, מיסטער, איהר האָט נאָר פֿאַרגעסען דעם מאַרין-מיניסטער׳ס באַפֿעהל, אַז אױף קריעג-שיפֿען זאָל מען ניט טרינקען קײן משקה?

גימפּעל בײניש: אַי, איז דאָס אַ גזלן, אַ שונא ישראל. דערפֿאַר װעל איך איהם געבען אַ קדחת ניט קײן כּלה. אַזאַ אַנטיסעמ… אױ, מײַן קאָפּ!
