Learn why Gimpel shouts "Lopatsanske Meksikaner" 5-6-1914, 5-7-1914, 5-8-1914

In the first strip, he won't make a match for a Red Cross nurse because she's a Christian (he assumes). In the second strip, though, he's willing to make a match for a Mexican, who surely is also a Christian. In the third strip, he meets up with somebody he already made a match with, and it hadn't turned out very well. Khane Pesel was the protagonist of another Samuel Zagat series. She was very strong minded.

Gimpel yells "Lopatsanski Meksikaners" - I asked Professor Lawrence Feinburg about this and he wrote:
Lopatsan in Russian denotes an inhabitant of the village of Lopățica in what is now southern Moldova (168 km. from Kishinev). If Gimpel came from the Odessa region (or could adopt an Odessan's perspective) the Mexicans might have reminded him of all those Romanians, Bulgars and Turks to the southwest.
Isn't that fabulous?

May 6, 1914: And so she's a "Red Cross" nurse, does that mean she shouldn't get married?
  1. GB: I'll still get even with them, all those wild Mexicans.
  2. GB: What's this? A women? Really? How does a woman come to be in the war?
  3. GB: I'll go chat with her about a match. Why not?
  4. Nurse: Yes, I came to the war on purpose. I'm a "Red Cross" nurse.
  5. GB: A cross? Feh! I have no business with women with crosses.

May 7, 1914: Even in the midst of bullets and bombs, he's not afraid to carry on with his business.
  1. GB: Here comes some guy who is not a soldier. One should make a match for him.
  2. GB: You may be a Mexican, but I won't leave you wifeless.
  3. GB: What's really going to become of you? Get married, because you won't live forever.
  4. Mexican: Say, Yankee, get lost, because I'm getting angry!
  5. GB: When the bombs are done with you, come back, we'll talk some more.

May 8, 1914: This is so far his worst encounter in Mexico.
  1. GB: Who's that fish? I should chat with him about a match.
  2. GB: Say, Mr. Mexican, I have important business to discuss with you. I have...
  3. Jake: Well I never, this is the matchmaker who hitched me to my Khane Pesel.
  4. Jake: Say, mister, it's your fault I had to run away here. Let me cut off your head.
  5. GB: Go be a prophet and figure: that unlucky guy ran all the way to Mexico.
