Speak out against the war and be branded a spy. 4-28-1914
This was probably a real concern: speaking out against the war might mark you as anti-American, or a spy. Those with barely a toehold in the new world probably feared holding unpopular political positions.
April 28, 1914: The war hasn't been bringing him any joy.
- GB: Say, Jake, want to be a man and hear what's being said about you, or not?
- GB: What have you talked yourself into, that you want to go to war?
- GB: I'd take a pinch of tobacco for the whole war. I'll ...
- Jake: Say, Mr. Policeman, arrest him, he's a spy! I myself heard it.
- GB: Sh'ma Yisrael! Help! They could arrest me and I'd be shot.
