Trying to find a point of view when war breaks out. 4-26-1914
This is a transition strip, from let's-make-fun-of-Mirke to acknowledgement of the Mexican war ( see this Gimpel Beynish comic strip on the invasion of Vera Cruz.) I feel the editor (it was Zagat's editor, Louis Miller, who came up with the ideas for the strips and wrote the captions) has strong feelings against this war, but that would have been a dangerous public stance.
April 26, 1914: He hadn't known at all that there are worse things than war.
- GB: Come here, young man. What good is it to you, to go to war? Why do you need it?
- GB: Someone might, God forbid, shoot you - you could die. I'm crying already over your young years.
- GB: Better you should get married. I have a bride for you, she's really something, you have never seen one like her.
- The Young Man: What? You want to give me this old battleship? This cannon should be my bride?
- The Young Man: Goodbye! I'd rather go in the army and get shot by Mexicans and Indians.
4-26-1914
ער האָט גאָר ניט געװאוסט, אַז עס זײַנען נאָך דאָ ערגערע זאַכען װיא מלחמה.

גימפּעל בײניש: קום נאָר אַהער, דו בחור. װאָס טױג דיר געהן אין דער מלחמה? צו װאָס דאַרפֿסטו דאָס?

דער בחור: װאָס? אָט דיא אַלטע קריעגס-שיף װילט איהר מיר גיבען? אָט דיא קאָנאָנע זאָל זײַן מײַן כּלה?

דער בחור: גוד באַי! איך׳ל שױן בעסער געהן אין דער מלחמה און געשאָסען װערען פֿון דיאַ מעקסיקאַנער און אינדיאַנער.
