Gimpel attacked by and then rescued by a submarine. 10-26-1914

The submarine was more or less invented in the mid 19th century, but first became powerful strategically during World War I.

Wikipedia begins the article at that link with an uncharacteristically cute topic sentence: "A submarine is a boat that goes underwater on purpose (i.e. not because of sinking)."

Gimpel is clearly in over his head.

October 26, 1914: All the time he's discovering new oddities in his voyage.
  1. GB: Master of the Universe, I'm like Jonah the Prophet, where is the fish?
  2. GB: Sha, something is bubbling; probably a new trouble. Maybe it's Jonah's fish?
  3. GB: Look at that, I didn't know such telephone receivers grew in the ocean.
  4. Commander: Mister, if you're not a Russian spy you can come in my submarine.
  5. GB: Really, God's miracle: One can be in the water and on it, too.
