Kaiser Wilhelm rejects Gimpel's offer of brides, prefering rifles and cannons. 11-6-1914
This is why Gimpel came to the warfields, to find young men! Generously, knowing such fine, powerful fellows would please his clients back home (the unmarried young ladies), he offers a deal to Kaiser Wilhelm: he'll split the matchmaking fees with him. Alas. If only Wilhelm had taken the brides and forsaken the cannons and rifles.
November 6, 1914: There's plenty of merchandise, but when they don't let you deal in it, things are very bitter.
- GB: Look at that young man! It's a sin, I swear, that he's a soldier. Wouldn't I get a fine matchmaker's fee for him!?
- GB: More lads! I'm not leaving here. I've got to make some money here. It's no small thing, such fellows!
- GB: Say, Wilhelm, who are these guys of yours? Give them to me and I'll split the fees with you, half and half.
- Wilhelm: This are my sons, understand? Do you have new rifles, new cannons of the right sort? Bring them here and we'll do business.
- GB: I don't have cannons and rifles, really, but I do have brides. For the oldest, Malke Mirel from Essex Street would be made to order, and ...
