A rainy day in Gimpel land. 12-10-1914

I'm still in Poland, regular posting to resume in about a week.


December 10, 1914: He makes a practical investment, but the results are not so good.
  1. GB: So I'll pay $2 for the umbrella, when I have an umbrella, I'll be able to have a talk with her.
  2. GB: Pleased to meet you, Miss. I can take you under my umbrella, it's allowed because I'm a matchmaker, you know.
  3. The Miss: Thank you, mister. Here's my house. And about a match, well, I'll ask my husband.
  4. GB: Say, stop! What sort of a mess is this? Forget about the girl, as long as there's still an umbrella.
  5. GB: Anyway, in a rainstorm is not the time to arrange a match. But the $2 for the umbrella - phooey!

ער מאַכט אַ פּראַקטישע אינװעסטמענט, אָבער דיא רעסולטאַטען זײַנען ניט אַזױ פֿױגעלדיג.

גימפּעל בײניש: זאָל זײַן צװײ דאָלער פֿאַר׳ן אָמברעלאַ, אַז איך װעל האָבען אַן אָמברעלאַ, װעל איך קענען פֿאַרפֿיהרען אַ שמועס מיט איהר.

גימפּעל בײניש: פּליעז-טו-מיטשו, מיסס. איך קען אײַך נעהמען אונטער מײַן אָמברעלאַ. איך מעג; איך בין אַ שדכן יו נו.

דיא מיסס: טהענק-יו, מיסטער. דאָ איז שױן מײַן הײם. און װעגען אַ שדכן – װעלל, איך װעל אַ פֿרעג טהוען מײַן מאַן.

גימפּעל בײניש: סעי, סטאָי! װאָס איז דאָס פֿאַר אַ חזיר׳ײ?יט דיא מױד איז אַן אַנדערע, אַבי עס איז דאָ אַן אָמברעלאַ.

גימפּעל בײניש: עני-װעי איז אין אַ רעגען ניט דיא צײַט צו רעדען אַ שידוך. אָבער דיא צװײ דאָלער פֿאַר׳ן אָמברעלאַ - פֿע!
