In America, Gimpel loses at cards, while across the Atlantic, England is bombarded by the Germans. 12-18-1914



December 18, 1914: Even Hanukah is not a happy holiday for everybody.
  1. Jake: Here's your fee - $50 - spend it in good health.
  2. GB: You know what? It's Hanukah, after all - let's play cards. You've got time.
  3. Jake: Well, since you don't have any more money, we'd better stop playing.
  4. Jake: No IOUs. Go home and make some more matches, then we'll play some more.
  5. GB: What blockhead declared that Hanukah is a happy holiday?
Dreams and reality
 
John Bull (England): Where are the German zeppelins which should destroy England? I don't see even one flying. Maybe German can look heroic in Poland, in Berlin and in France, but by me here in England - huh! It can't even get close to me.

John Bull: Oy, gevald! What's this? A German flotilla bombarded my cities! Feh! The German are really cheeky, how many times I've said to them and others that no enemies can approach my borders and here they've got the nerve to bring a whole flotilla.

דזשײק: נו, אַז איהר האָט שױן ניט קײן געלד װעלען מיר שױן בעסער סטאָפּען שפּיעלען.

דזשײק: אױף באָרג איז ניטאָ. געהט אַהײם און מאַכט אַנדערע שידוכים, װעלען מיר װײַטער שפּיעלען.

גימפּעל בײניש: װאָס פֿאַר אַ שוטים האָבען דאָס אײַסגעקלערט אַז חנוכּה איז אַ פֿרעהליכער יום טובֿ?
