Gimpel forgets to register to vote: 11-2-1915

I'm working my way through 1915 for Volume III of the Gimpel series. I'm just getting to early November. Here Gimpel says every "birger" is obligated to vote. Birger can mean citizen or member of the bourgeoisie, making me wonder (though not enough to look it up) how far up the social ladder he thought you had to be to vote.

I hope you registered and I hope you vote!


November 2, 1915: When it comes to having a short memory nobody can beat him.
  1. GB: Why are you so angry at America? As a citizen/burgher you should be proud.
  2. GB: Today is election day, today's the day every citizen can give his opinion.
  3. Jake: Yes, mister, you're right, but what if I can't vote?
  4. GB: What do you mean, you can't? As a citizen it's you're duty to vote and...
  5. GB: Haven't you registered? Oy, woe is me - I forgot to register, myself.
