The night a benefit was put on for the Galician refugees and Gimpel is going. 1-30-1915

It wasn't often that Gimpel shilled for something in the real world. Here's the headline and part of the article from Di Warheit on the front page, and the comic on the back page of the January 30, 1915 edition.
This evening the bazaar for the Galician refugees opens
The bazaar for the benefit of the Galician and Budoviner refugees now wasting away in Vienna will open tonight in Dennington Hall, 214 Second Street. The opening features a lineup of touching ceremonies. There will be speeches by many famous Jews and by specially invited representatives of Austria's government who are here in America.

The bazaar is an international exposition in small format. Articles representing almost every industry and almost every country in the world will be featured, from a Chasidic snuffbox to a Parisian gown in the very lastest style.

The destruction caused by the Russian barbarians in Galicia will be seen at the bazaar in a collection of pictures taken on the scene specially for this occasion, with the permission of the Austrian goverment. A special "pitcher" will be Ostrovski's famous pogrom painting. This talented artist survived the Odessa pogrom himself and has immortalized with paint on canvas this terrible tragedy, earning him an international reputation.

A big orchestra will open the bazaar this evening and will concertize every evening of the bazaar throughout the week. Famous Jewish actors will entertain the public with parlor singing and couplets.

  1. Jake: What are you saying! What's the matter - you're getting out of the matchmaking business? Where are you running to?
  2. Suzy: Let me hear even just one word from you. I have a big dowry and my father has a big store.
  3. GB: Don't stand in my way. Your work's a waste of time. Today I have nothing to do with matchmaking.
  4. GB: Now do you understand why I'm so busy today? Isn't this better than making matches?
  5. GB: Come, children, everybody come, don't be stingy and show up (sign says "Bazaar given by the Austrian - Hungarian Zionists for the war victims"). We'll talk about matches tomorrow.

דער חורבן װאָס דיא רוסישע באָרבאַרען האָבען געמאַכט אין גאַליציען װעט בײַם באַזאַר געזעהען װערען אין אַ רײהע בילדער װאָס זענען גענומען געװאָרען אױפֿ׳ן פּלאַטצ ספּעציעל פֿאַר דיעזער געלעגענהײט, מיט דער ערלױבניס פֿון דער עסטרױכעשער רעגיערונג. אַ ספּעציעלע ״פּיטשור״ װעלען זײַן אָסטראָװסקי׳ס בעריהמטע פּאָגראָם מאָהלערײַען. דיעזער בעגאַבטער קינסטלער האָט אַלײן איבערגעלעבט דעם פּאָגראָם אין אָדעס און האָט אױפֿ׳ן לײװענט פֿעראײביגט דיעזע שרעקליכע טראַגעדיע אין פֿאַרבען װאָס האָבען איהם פֿערשאַפֿט אַ װעלט נאָמען.
