New Yiddish slang of 1915: "aher gey" 1-29-1915

I guess the slang "aher gey" was new at this time. In my Yiddish Penny Songs collection two of the songs which are still lost (ie I haven't found the melodies for them) are "Aher gey (der rikhtiker)" and "Aher gey Tsar Nikolai" It seems to mean "get lost."

Uses English word dzshouk (joke)


January 29, 1915: He speaks up at a lucky hour and tastes the flavor of the new "joke" on the Jewish street.
  1. Well, this is a swinish time! If somebody doesn't say "Come, make me a match," or...
  2. [Here, go!] What's this echo? Are people calling me, or...
  3. [Here, go!] Over here too? What's the matter with saying "Excuse me"?
  4. [Here, go!] What kind of turmoil is this? Constantly 'get lost' and 'get lost.' Oh, I understand!
  5. [Aher, go!] This is the loafers' swinish saying. What nerve! Making fun of me with their joke.

ער רעדט זיך אױס אין אַ מזל׳דיגער שעה און פֿאַרזוכט דעם טעם פֿון דעם נײַעם ״דזשאָוק״ אױף דער אידישער גאַס.
