Oranges from Palestine: they are not free. 2-3-1915

Here we have another Public Service Announcement - don't trust strangers - and learn that even in 1915 one could get oranges from Israel / Palestine on the streets of New York. I wonder how they got across the ocean.

Today's Yinglish: "orendzhes" "mister" and of course "pedler" though the latter had been in the language a long time.

February 3, 1915: Not all mitzvahs are equal, but they're never worthless.
  1. Jake: Here are the oranges from Palestine. Have a taste, you'll see, they're good.
  2. GB: Good or bad -- if one is invited to taste oranges, one should obey on the spot.
  3. GB: Really fine oranges. I should take a few home, they'll be a blessing.
  4. GB: I have to pay? The guy who told me to take a sample, he's the one who should pay.
  5. Peddler: Mister, that guy is long gone. Pay or you're going to meet up with a policeman.
