2-22-1915: In which Gimpel explains exaggeration is not the same as lying


February 22, 1915: His holiday begins ok but it doesn't end very well.
  1. Yes, children, here he is, and you know why he was a good boy? Because he never told a lie.
  2. That's how it is, children. One mustn't tell a lie. It's a ... come in! A guest on an ordinary Monday!
  3. Some sexton's wife. Probably she's come to nag me about charity. Oh, do I love the gals who come to nag.
  4. Do I make matches? What a question. I'm Gimpel Beynish, of course. Today alone I've made six matches.
  5. Where've they all run to? It's really a goyish holiday but it seems I exaggerated a bit.
2-22-1915
ער פֿאַנגט אָן דעם יום טוב ניש-קשה, נאָר ער ענדיגט גאָר ניט פֿױגעלדיג.

יאָ, קינדערליך, דאָס איז ער און װעסט איהר פֿאַרװאָס ער איז געװען אַ װאױלער באָי? װײַל ער האָט קײן ליגען ניט געזאָגט.

אַזױ איז עס, קינדערליך. מען טאָהר ניט זאָגען קײן ליגען. עס איז אַ … קאָם אין! אַ גאַסט אין אַ פּראָסטען מאָנטאַג!

עפּעס אַ גבאי׳טע. געקומען מסתמא דרעהן אַ קאָפּ מכּח טשאַריטי. אי האָב איך זײ ליעב דיא בהור׳טעס אַז זײ קומען דרעהן אַ קאָפּ.

צי איך רעד שידוכים? אַ שאלה אַביסעל. איך בין דאָך גימפּעל בײניש. הײַנט אַלײן האָב איך שױן געמאַכט אודאי זעקס שידוכים.

װאָס זײַנען זײ זיך אַלע צעלאָפֿען? טאַקי אַ גױ׳אישער יום טובֿ נאָר דאַכט זיך אַז איך האָב אַביסעל איבערגעכאַפּט דיא מאָס.
