2-27-1915: Gimpel, full of buyer's remorse, sends the books back to Amazon.

In the previous strip, Gimpel thought he got all his encyclopedias for a dollar. Now it turns out that was just the shipping cost, here comes the collector. Nowadays I think you do have recourse if you buy something this way and regret it, but I doubt he would have gotten away with this back then.


February 27, 1915: He's already figured out how to get rid of his unwanted guests.
  1. GB: So they've turned up! What am I going to do with these books?
  2. GB: Here comes another guest. Maybe at least this time it will be a respectable person.
  3. GB: Greetings! Sure, I'm Gimpel Beynish. Of course I'm a matchmaker. Come sit down!
  4. Guest: I'm here to collect the money for the books. Today you have to pay the first hundred dollars.
  5. GB: Take the books back, the money you'll get when I've read them all.

ער װײס שױן װיא צו פּטור׳ן אונגעװינשטע געסט.

גימפּעל בײניש: נו האָב איך זיך אָפּגעזוכט! װאו טהוט מען זיך מיט זײ אַהין, מיט דיא ביכער?

גימפּעל בײניש: עס געהט שױן װיעדער אַ גאַסט. אפֿשר כאָטש איצט קומט עפּעס אַ לײַטישער מענש.

גימפּעל בײניש: שלום עליכם! שור בין איך גימפּעל בײניש. אודאי בין איך אַ שדכן. קומט זיצט!

גאַסט: איך בין דער קאָלעקטאָר פֿאַר דיא ביכער. הײַנט דאַרפֿט איהר באַצאָהלען די ערשטע הונדערט דאָלאַר.

גימפּעל בײניש: דערװײַל נאַ דיר די ביכער צוריק, און דאָס געלד װעסטו קריגען װען איך װעל זײ איבערלעזען.
