In which Gimpel learns about living crustaceans and high tide at Coney Island. 7-19-1914, 7-20-1914, 7-21-1914

The Gimpel Beynish Yiddish comic strip probably owed some of its popularity to its visiting scenes familiar to the Warheit readers. In the summer of 1913 and again in the summer of 1914 Gimpel and his mischievous sons (but not, evidently, his wife) spent a lot of time at the beach. Oddly, Gimpel is a very good swimmer. Where did he learn?

In the first cartoon, the English word "lobster" is used here to refer to a crab. I wonder if they really knew the difference and this was just a joke, or whether all treyf stuff in the ocean was lobster to them?

In the second strip, the English words "high tide" and "low tide" are used. Maybe this was a Public Service Announcement for the Lower East Side Jewish community - after all, many of them had lived far from the sea all their lives until they came to New York - to be careful with the ocean.

There's a word that got cut off in the last caption in the third strip. If anybody can figure out what it is I'd love to hear it (remember you can click for a larger view).

July 19, 1914: Finally he's the victim of a real accident.
  1. GB: That's the way, children, one should swim, if one wants to be a good swimmer ...
  2. GB: What's that, loafers? You're making your monkey business again?
  3. GB: Stop it, hooligans, I say, or I'll kill you.
  4. Motke: May we sicken, Papa, if we did anything. It must be some actual thing.
  5. Notke: Why are you running away and stealing from the ocean, Papa? Give that lobster here.

July 20, 1914: Evidently neither he nor the policeman understand the science of "low tide" and "high tide."
  1. GB: Lads, go look around Coney Island, and I'll sit here a while by the ocean.
  2. GB: A pleasure that the loafers are gone. I can grab forty winks here on the sand.
  3. GB: Brrrrrr
  4. GB: Oy, gevald, I'm drowning! Who threw me into the ocean?
  5. Policeman: That's how it is? You wanted to commit suicide? Come in court, you'll receive a few years in prison.

July 21, 1914: Of course heroism is sometimes unappreciated.
  1. Motke: Look there, papa! A person's drowning. Quick, save him.
  2. GB: Hold on, mister, hold on for just a bit longer; I'll save you.
  3. GB: Don't be afraid, mister, I won't let you drown.
  4. The Mister: You see the nerve of this old clown? I go swimming and he pushes me into the water.
  5. GB: It's no use running away, you loafers, you'll get your [?] from me!
